Description
Mangrove forests are increasingly known as one of the most carbon-rich ecosystems on our planet, with a strong carbon sink capacity. However, human activities and global climate change, such as sea-level rise, directly influence mangrove forests because of their unique habitats. Though more and more mangrove nature reserves have been established to protect and reforest areas along estuaries and coastlines, which facilitates atmospheric carbon sequestration under nature-based solutions, less well understood are climate change effects on mangrove blue carbon and their future status remains uncertain. In this talk, I will show our research that explored how sea-level rise and warming affect mangrove carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions, and show a case of mangrove restoration in Xiamen, China.
